The AUDIT Cycle: A Reflective Path to Transform Previous Patterns and Step Into Freedom

Have you ever found yourself repeating the same pattern over and over again, whether in relationships, leadership, parenting, or personal habits, and wondered, Why do I keep doing this even though I know it’s not serving me? Well, you’re not alone.

Most of us live with unconscious tendencies—protective strategies that once helped us survive but now silently shape our present. Awareness alone isn’t enough. To truly shift, we must understand the emotional roots of our patterns and make aligned decisions based on who we are becoming.

When you lead at a high level, your decisions carry weight; however, your inner verve still runs the show.  If stress, people-pleasing, overcontrol, or burnout are present, it’s time to audit more than your operations … it’s time to audit your internal patterns.

The AUDIT Cycle helps leaders to step into conscious authorship, breaking reactive cycles, reconnecting with purpose, and leading with clarity.  It’s a practical and powerful framework that I use in coaching to guide clients from stuck cycles to self-authored transformation.

The AUDIT Cycle: From Repetition to Freedom

1. Awareness of Self: “What’s happening?”

This first step is about observation, not judgment. We bring curiosity to the surface patterns that keep showing up, be it over functioning, shutting down, people-pleasing, lashing out, or perfectionism.

We ask:

  • What are my go-to reactions?

  • When do I feel stuck or triggered?

  • What am I avoiding, overdoing, or repeating?

Example: “I always say yes to things I don’t want to do, then feel resentful and drained.”

2. Understanding of Self: “Why am I doing this?”

Behind every pattern is a need, a story, or a part of you that is trying to protect or soothe. This stage is about discovering the emotional drivers, core beliefs, or conditioning behind the pattern.

We explore:

  • What am I trying to achieve or avoid?

  • What belief is underneath this behavior?

  • When did I learn this?

Example: “I was raised to believe that saying no makes me selfish; I continue to fear rejection if I speak up.”

3. Decision: “Is this working for me now?”

Once you’ve named the pattern and understood its roots, you’re no longer operating on autopilot. This opens the door to your self-agency of consciously deciding whether this behavior still serves you.

We consider:

  • What is this costing me?

  • Who do I want to be now?

  • What new action aligns with my values and identity?

Example: “Saying yes is costing me my peace and presence with my family. I’m ready to say no with kindness.”

4. Integration: “How do I make this real?”

Change doesn’t stick just because we decide to make a change; we need practices that support the new path, because what we practice grows stronger. This phase focuses on experimentation, rituals, and accountability.

We practice:

  • “When -Then” planning for triggering situations

  • Grounding techniques for when we feel ourselves slipping

  • Support systems to keep us aligned

Example: “When I feel pressure to say yes immediately, I’ll pause and say, ‘Let me think about that and get back to you.’”

5. Transformation: “What’s possible now?”

This is the moment when you realize that previous patterns and/or proclivities no longer own you. They may revisit, but now you meet then with more clarity, self-compassion, and choice. You’ve begun the process of rewriting your story from within.

We reflect:

  • How have I grown?

  • What story am I now living?

  • What parts of me have I reclaimed?

Example: “I’ve learned to honor my needs without guilt. That’s a new story I’m proud to live into.”
